How Credit Counseling Works

Affiliated with:
Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counselling Agencies
National Foundation for Credit Counselling
CreditTalk.com

Becoming the first and only electronic payment processor for the credit counseling industry in 1993, MasterCard RPPS now serves thousands of creditors and agencies, representing nearly 100 percent of the industrys electronic transaction volume. Agencies and creditors alike depend on our extensive connectivity and fast, reliable processing. We also continue to break new ground in the industry, with solutions that increase productivity, enhance customer service, and lower costs—such as our electronic debt management proposals (DMPs/EDI).

By replacing a completely manual, paper-based, process with a fully automated procedure, electronic DMPs/EDI reduce the required processing time from weeks to days. For creditors and agencies, the capability delivers tremendous efficiencies, and the quick turnaround greatly enhances consumers peace of mind—and promotes responsible solutions to their financial issues.

Credit Counseling Service Functions
  • Electronic proposals including full budget disclosures—Agencies can send electronic DMP proposals to creditors
  • Electronic proposal acceptance/rejection—Creditors can accept or reject proposals and make counterproposals.
  • Electronic balance verifications—Agencies can submit balance verification requests to creditors, which, in turn, can notify agencies if the amount is correct - and if not, state the correct balance.
  • Electronic program closeouts—Agencies that close out a DMP for any reason can notify creditors, and similarly, creditors that terminate a DMP for any reason can notify agencies.
